Marissa Wright -La Greca
Hi there! This website entails my academic & professional pursuits as an aspiring marine biologist. Listed here are my current publications, educational experiences, and research interests.
About Me.
I am a PhD candidate at the University of Victoria located on Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada). My PhD is focussed on using probiotics to improve climate resilience of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas).
Although my PhD is through the University of Victoria, I conduct my research at the Vancouver Island University Center for Shellfish Research and Deep Bay Marine Station facility.

I am passionate about understanding the impacts of multi-stressor climate change events on marine organisms. With changing, adverse seawater conditions, I am interested in researching how different marine organisms will respond to near-future seawater conditions. My main research focuses includes researching tools (e.g., genetic selection, probiotics, and seawater conditions during early development) to improve shellfish resilience to growing seawater stressors such as heat, ocean acidification, and bacterial pathogens.

Shellfish are aquaculturally and ecologically important animals. With the growing global human population, shellfish offer as one of the most environmentally sustainable protein sources available. However, in order to support shellfish demand, scientific tools to promote shellfish survival to climate stressors are needed.

Duties included creating workshop activities for 2nd-year Organic Chemistry students to facilitate group-led learning and studying habits.

I led a 2nd-year Cell Biology study guide and practice final. Proceeds collected were used to fund educational programs in developing countries.
I helped develop a field trip educational program about ocean acidification for youths (grade 8-11) in collaboration with VIU's Deep Bay Marine Station facility. Check it out here!
I was a teaching assistant for Cell Biology (BIOL225) labs at UVic. Responsibilities include facilitating labs and marking lab assignments. Lab assignments included weekly in-lab assignments, a final formal lab report, and a final lab exam.
I was a teaching assistant for Genetics (BIOL230) labs at UVic. Responsibilities include facilitating labs and marking lab assignments. Marked assignments included short-essay assignments, paper reviews, primer design assignments, a presentation, and a final lab exam.
